Wood

Wood for furniture is split in two main categories: hard wood and soft wood.

Hard wood comes from trees that shed their leaves in winter while soft wood comes from trees that stay green all year round. Somewhat! Let say that is very old way of looking at wood, and it is a good rule of thumb.

When people say hard wood they mostly think of Oak, Walnut, Ash, Maple, Beech and when they are saying softwood they think of Pine,  Poplar, Linden.

Technically the hardness of wood is measured on Janka scale, name after it’s inventor. Janka measures the force needed to insert a 11.28mm steel ball halfway into a woodboard.

Finishing guide

This finishing guide covers several options for finishing furniture, including Natural OilsBees WaxDanish OilLacquerPaints and Stains.

Natural oils are a great choice for furniture inside the house, as long as they are not in contact with alcohol. They taint the wood slightly but preserve the natural look and feel of the wood. Bees wax is a natural finish that is sensitive to interactions with the object and is best used as an additional finish after natural oils to add extra shine. Danish oil is a varnish that brings out wood fibers and provides excellent protection. Lacquer is a great option for surfaces that see a lot of use or for exterior settings. Paints come in a variety of colors and types and can be used for both interior and exterior furniture. Finally, stains are used primarily for coloring wood and do not provide protection.

Materials, cost & quality

Now a days, the contemporary art had shown us that when it comes to furniture it can be build out of many materials, but few things have defined it as constantly as wood.

The Cost & Qualitycan vary wildly and mI don’t see many ay not necessarily be related to the intrinsic value of the furniture you are buying.

Low quality furniture will last few years and you will notice pretty soon the signs of wear and tear. Although cheap, it is sold at high profit margins and usually poor quality of manufacturing. It is usually worthless investing a lot of time and effort in low quality materials that still have to deal with resistance to wear and tear. This is the case of anything made out of Particle boards.

Sustainable existence

When we calculated our Carbon Footprint, we took into consideration the impact of the business itself as well as the impact of the households of those involved in the business. Let’s call that sustainable existence.

Some of CO2 may not be related to the business, however, if we are to take a responsible approach we need to consider the complete impact of Madero, not only what is convenient. As not harming the ecosystem further is very different than mending the damage done so far

The effects of wood in interior design

The presence of wood in interior design has been found to have significant positive effects on both mental and physical well-being. As part of the biophilic design concept, incorporating elements of nature into interior spaces has become a trend in response to the detachment from nature caused by urbanization. Studies have shown that wood can reduce stress levels, increase concentration, productivity, and overall satisfaction. The physical and psychological effects of wood’s presence can create a home that improves our lives.

Waxing & oiling

do it with a soft cloth only if necessary and only after you are sure the surface is clean. Otherwise, do it every 5 years or so to keep up the surface luster. Clean beforehand.
