Carbon footprint for Madero and related households

41.58 metric tons generated by Madero and related households in 2021

17.09 estimated minimum CO2 trapped in 2022

1.29 estimated minimum CO2 actively absorbed in 2022

23.20  Madero: max CO2 footprint in 2022

When we calculated our Carbon Footprint, we took into consideration the impact of the business itself as well as the impact of the households of those involved in the business. Let’s call that sustainable existence.

Some of CO2 may not be related to the business, however, if we are to take a responsible approach we need to consider the complete impact of Madero, not only what is convenient. As not harming the ecosystem further is very different than mending the damage done so far.

Sustainable existence

In 2021 the Top 3 generators of CO2 account for 72% of the CO2 generated by Madero in 2021. Those are:

  1. Electric energy: 14.77 metric tones (36%)
  2. Transportation: 8.41 metric tones (20%)
  3. Food: 6.72 metric tones (16%)

Actively absorb carbon

There are 3 ways we are managing our CO2 Footprint:

1.Reduction of CO2 generation:

a. by purchasing technologically advance equipment with lower energy consumption (already included in computation of CO2 generated)

b. Investing in solar panels which will reduce Energy CO2 generation by approximately 6.78 metric tones annually

2.Trapping CO2 (estimated beneficial effect at 80.53 metric tones per year in 15 years)

a. Furniture build of solid wood (and for that matter anything build of solid wood) traps high amounts of CO2 which would otherwise be released in the atmosphere in 3 major ways:

  • rotting in the forest
  • burning for energy
  • used for building materials which would generate even more CO2  (manufacturing process of  MDF is estimated to have a negative CO2 footprint of -600kg/m3  while wood has in excess of -1200kg/m3)

3. Active absorption CO2 (estimated at 5.65 metric tones per year in 25 years if we don’t plant any other tree)

a. We planted 28 trees which have reached maturity (a tree would store over it’s mature life an average of 25kg of CO2 per year, so say a oak tree would store at least 900kg of CO2 over it’s lifetime)

b. We planted 198 trees in the past 5 years (various stages of maturity)

c. We will plant a tree for every piece of furniture we sell. We have the space to do that or we are controlling the plantation and development of the planted trees ourselves if they are not planted on our land)

Cumulative carbon footprint Madero (mtCo2)

Is a long term issue and we look at it cumulatively as we believe that it is not enough to reduce our Carbon Footprint, because it will not solve the problem. It may alleviate some of the effects or decelerate the negative effects. But, it will not solve the problem.

We will be regarding our Carbon Footprint as a cumulative issue of both the business we are running as well as the lives of  people working for this business and their families. Thus our purpose is:

  1. to reach a noperational neutral effect within 10 years
  2. pay CO2 investment debt within 15 years
  3. keep a negative CO2 profile after 15 years
